Man Without a Head

by Nick Jaina

You lost me
you lost me in the hedges of your yard
falling
black and whites are parked on the boulevard
wires arcing white
votives casting red
a man without a head

I met you
bathing in the field of the stereo waves
outside
bagging on the film that his cameo saves
blessed without a warning
night without a morning
words without a scene
a hive without a queen
I wish the cab were late
digging through your bed
a man without a head

soon
night
will call us
call us
the moon's
light
upon us
upon us
shy
feet
pointing
pointing
cheap
wine
anointing
anointing

don't
oh don't be everything they wrote
on your own
you can peg them all as fools on a sinking boat
hands that sever trust
grinding on the clutch
a life without your touch

I'm standing on your ex's porch
they released that man cuz his DNA
was twisted like the tracks that the trainwreck scorched
come and meet them all with your prayers and cards
students hanging scrim
bulbs that flicker dim
films that someone found
projected without sound
the promenade is dead
walk with me instead
a man without a head

soil
and
fire
fire
smoke
in your eyes
crying
crying
no
one
deserves
this
at least
not
you
