Once But Never Again

by Nick Jaina

once but never again
you tricked me into the oven
red birds and black birds
a river running backwards
in my head

once but never again
you'll share hell with politicians
you say "holy" I know you mean only
like a poem

la da da da

when I die and come back
you'll be old and I'll be young again
you'll be trapped and I'll be sprung again
like a bird

when they lay your body down
I will dance upon your grave and then
I will never be your slave again
that's my word

la da da da

empty fashion
your kiss is sweet as absinthe
rolling papers
an auction full of fakers
I'll carve a watermelon
and set it out on the river

once but never again
you tricked me into the oven
this cloth is feeble, I'll take a needle to my hem
once but never again
I have light and you have only sin
la da da da
