Nick Jaina's new album The Monster Mash is a mature approach at having fun. The instrumentation is spare and gorgeous, in most cases electric guitar with no drums, like an electrified Elliott Smith or Leonard Cohen. The lyrical approach is uncommonly playful and intricate, such as on "Strange Undertaking" when he sings, "My head is always one step ahead/ it's always trying to hang the painting before it's been painted." Rather than a Halloween-themed album, it is a celebration of not fitting in with the mainstream, of not wanting to go along with the dance that everyone else is doing.
