Winding Sheet
by Nick Jaina
love is an accent that you pull on like a scarf
there is a poem that I have memorized by heart
it starts off simple, with a clever conceit
then its intentions hit you with the power of a winding sheet
I danced with you on the cobblestones
on the third longest day of the best year of my life
I danced with you on the cobblestones
in your home town
I make the babies cry when I fall down in church
I am like a steamer that has slipped out of its berth
when the soldiers open up after marching for so long
all the whales in the ocean can sing along
I danced with you on the cobblestones
on the third longest day of the best year of my life
I danced with you on the cobblestones
in your home town
if there was a pill that could make this go away
don't you think I'd take that god damn pill every day?
if there was a word I could point to in a book
don't you think I'd circle it, cut it out, hang it on the hook?
I danced with you on the cobblestones
on the third longest day of the best year of my life
I danced with you on the cobblestones
in your home town
I danced with you on the cobblestones
on the third longest day of the best year of my life
I danced with you on the cobblestones
in your home town
